Tongue & Groove Driveway Gates in Accrington

I’ve been out and about in Accrington a fair bit lately. Had a bloke from up near the Coppice ask me about tongue and groove driveway gates just last week. He wanted to know if they’d stand up to the weather we get round here. Let’s be honest, Lancashire rain isn’t exactly forgiving. If you put the wrong timber up, you’ll be looking at a warped mess by the second winter.

That’s why I always tell people, it’s not just about what the gate looks like on day one. It’s about how it’s put together. When we build tongue and groove driveway gates, we use proper, thick boards that lock into each other properly. It stops the wind whipping through and keeps everything solid. I’ve seen plenty of cheap shop-bought gates that rattle like a tin can when it’s windy. We don't do that. We build them to last.

Will they rot if we get a wet winter?

People worry about rot, especially in Accrington where the air holds a lot of moisture. I’ve seen gates that turn black and start crumbling because the wood wasn't treated right or the design held water. My advice is always to go for a high-quality softwood that’s been pressure-treated, or if you’ve got the budget, go for hardwood like Iroko. I did a job for Dave over in Clayton-le-Moors last month. He was dead set on a certain look, but he was worried about the bottom of the gates rotting into the driveway. We sorted him out with a slight gap for drainage and used a really good preservative. He was proper chuffed when we finished. The main thing is to keep them off the ground and keep the finish maintained. If you ignore them for five years, even the best wood will give up. Just keep an eye on the treatment and they’ll be sound.

How long does it actually take to fit?

I usually tell people to clear the diary for the day. Getting the posts in right is the most important bit. If the posts aren't set deep enough in proper concrete, the weight of the gates will pull them over in no time. I’ve had to fix so many jobs where someone just dug a shallow hole and hoped for the best. That’s not how we roll. We dig deep, use decent post-mix, and make sure the levels are spot on before we even hang a gate.

I’m not one for rushing a job. You can’t rush timber. You have to let it sit, check the swing, and make sure the latches aren't catching. It’s a full day’s work for a proper set of gates. When we leave, we take all the rubbish with us, and you won’t even know we’ve been there, apart from the fact you’ve got a cracking new entrance. It’s satisfying work, getting them to hang perfectly straight.
